Concerta 18mg tablets contain methylphenidate hydrochloride in an extended-release formulation using OROS (Osmotic Release Oral System) technology. It is indicated for the treatment of ADHD in children (6 years and older), adolescents, and adults as part of a comprehensive treatment programme.

How Concerta 18mg Works Methylphenidate blocks the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, increasing their levels in the synaptic cleft. This enhances executive function, attention, and impulse control. The unique OROS system provides an initial immediate-release layer followed by gradual release over 10–12 hours, offering consistent therapeutic effects without multiple daily doses.

Dosage and Administration Concerta is taken once daily in the morning. The 18mg strength is often the starting dose for children or patients new to stimulants. Tablets must be swallowed whole with water and must not be chewed, crushed, or divided, as this would destroy the extended-release mechanism and could lead to overdose. Dose is titrated based on individual response, with common strengths including 18mg, 27mg, 36mg, and 54mg.

Quality and Formulation Concerta 18mg tablets are produced by Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) under strict GMP standards. They are white to off-white, capsule-shaped tablets with a distinctive laser-drilled hole for osmotic release.

Warnings and Precautions Concerta 18mg is a Schedule II controlled substance with significant potential for abuse, dependence, and diversion. Serious cardiovascular risks exist, including increased blood pressure and heart rate. Common side effects include decreased appetite, insomnia, headache, stomach ache, and anxiety.

Contraindicated in patients with marked anxiety, tension, glaucoma, tics, Tourette’s syndrome, or history of substance abuse. Avoid concomitant use with MAO inhibitors. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, height, and weight is essential, especially in children. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
